In honor of the University of Miami School of Medicine’s
50th anniversary, and to commemorate the event in a historical
fashion, the School’s senior administration decided
to create a time capsule. This project is an important part
of the 50 year milestone, it is also our hope that the items
in the time capsule will help convey the medical school’s
story for future generations.
A Time Capsule Advisory Committee was formed to guide the
collection of significant objects reflecting the medical school’s
life span. To gather ideas for items to include in the time
capsule from a broad cross-section of people at UMSM, focus
groups were established, notices were posted in print and
Internet medical school publications, and a questionnaire
was circulated to members of the medical school community.
After the collection of objects was complete, the Time Capsule
Advisory Committee conducted a review and determined what
to include in the Time Capsule.
As part of the 50th anniversary celebration, the time capsule
and its contents will be on display at the Louis Calder Memorial
Library in February 2003. To mark the conclusion of the anniversary
season, the time capsule will be buried in May 2003.
