To the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine family,

I truly appreciate the warm welcome I have received at meetings and events all over campus and the community --  including last week’s spectacular welcome reception, and my first town hall meeting.  It was so exciting to meet so many members of the incredibly talented team that makes up the Miller School of Medicine.

That team, of course, includes all of us.  You will hear me talk about the unique contribution of every member of our faculty, staff and trainees to our grand goal, often describing us as “flying in formation.”  We must each have trust in the person to our left and the person to our right; if you know you can count on me, and I know I can count on you, working as a team there is simply no limit to what we can accomplish.

You have already accomplished so much.  As I make the rounds, discovering our strengths and opportunities, I see enormous achievement but also even greater potential in our three missions of research, education, and caring for patients.  Among my priorities for program development are the creation of an institute for human genomics, an expanded global health initiative, extensive collaboration with the School of Nursing, and a heightened focus on cardiovascular disease.  I will be adding to this list as I work with you to formulate our strategic vision in the coming weeks.

As we prepare to open our spectacular Clinical Research Institute, and move plans forward for our Biomedical Research Institute and our new University hospital, we must remain ever mindful of the patients who are at the center of all we do.  We have no more important task than optimizing the safety and effectiveness of our medical care.  I will always have a sign on the wall of my office that guides every decision about clinical issues.  That sign says, “If it’s the right thing for the patient, it’s the right thing to do.”

That includes expanding Miami Medicine, our top-flight clinical enterprise, and continuing to support and grow our relationship with Jackson Memorial Hospital.  It means staying focused on the human dimension of what we do, on our remarkable opportunity to help the unfortunate individuals who are sick and need medical care.  It is our privilege to be able to discover the ways to return them to the best life possible – and ultimately to shelter our patients, friends, families and all of us from deadly disease.

You will hear from me often.  I want to hear from you as well, as together we work on this critical mission for the residents of South Florida -- and the world.
