The buzz about the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

Mid-October in Miami:  A fine breeze at the Southern end of the U.S. continent.  With a bit of luck we have dodged hurricanes for this year.  Trying on the shoes of a new dean, looking back at the past of a great school, I woke up this morning with unprecedented hope for the future.  The opportunity ahead of us is greater than I had ever anticipated. 

So what’s the buzz about Miami?  It is so powerful to collectively decide that we can roll up our sleeves, get to work, and get the job done.  This is not about what any one individual is responsible for, but as was the case for the construction of the greatest edifices of human history, talented people wake up and join in, attracted by the collectivity of greatness.  Momentum was an inspired name for the resourcing of such a remarkable enterprise.

From northern cities to the west coast, the word is out -- Miami is it!  The greatest mission of all is ahead of us:  improving the health of a large region in South Florida and beyond, opening our doors to our patients, becoming accessible, delivering care in a timely fashion, always with careful regard to safety, confidentiality and effectiveness. 

From the tallest office building to the streets of poverty in Miami, UM is delivering what we had all been hoping for: great medicine, “Miami Medicine.”  There is a lot of work ahead of us and we will never be satisfied, but something important is happening.  The time of opportunity has arrived for people, for businesses -- for health.

Like a lighthouse in the mist, we begin to distinguish the features of what we are becoming, the silhouette of a success that we have collectively built and that will cause our community to rejoice.  Standing strong on a great tradition, our future is steadfast, and we will achieve greatness.  No longer just a buzz, the role of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as a critical player in U.S. health will have become reality.

But remember, each one of you is vitally important.  Everyone contributes to our mission.  Our progress is still fragile, but if our community stands united and seamless, we will get to where we deserve to be.  And Miami will be the place where it all happens in the 21^st Century.

El rumor acerca de University of Miami Miller School of Medicine

Mediados de octubre en Miami: una brisa suave en el extremo sur de la parte continental de los Estados Unidos. Con un poco de suerte hemos eludido los huracanes previstos para este año. En esta nueva experiencia como decano, contemplando el pasado de una gran universidad, me desperté esta mañana con una esperanza sin precedente para el futuro. La oportunidad que yace delante es más grande de lo que jamás anticipé.

Entonces, ¿cuál es el rumor acerca de Miami? Decidir de manera colectiva que podemos remangarnos las mangas, ponernos a trabajar y hacer el trabajo tiene un valor incalculable. No se trata de lo que cada uno es responsable como individuo, sino de que, como fue el caso de la construcción de los grandes edificios de la historia de la humanidad, la gente talentosa despierte y se unan atraídos por la colectividad de la grandeza. Momentum fue un nombre inspirado en pos de la adquisición de recursos de tan sorprendente emprendimiento.

Desde las ciudades del norte hasta la costa oeste, ya se sabe que: ¡Miami es el lugar! La misión más grande yace delante de nosotros: mejorar la salud en una amplia región en el sur de Florida y más allá, abriéndoles las puertas a nuestros pacientes, convirtiendonos más accesibles, prestando el servicio en el tiempo adecuado, siempre con la cuidadosa consideración de la seguridad, la confidencialidad y la efectividad.

Desde los más altos edificios de oficinas hasta las calles más pobres de Miami, la Universidad de Miami (UM) provee lo que todos estábamos esperando: excelente medicina, “Medicina de Miami”. Tenemos mucho trabajo por delante, y nunca estaremos satisfechos, pero algo importante está sucediendo. Llegó el momento de la oportunidad para la gente, para los negocios, para la salud.

Como un faro en la niebla, comenzamos a identificar los rasgos de aquello en lo que nos estamos convirtiendo: la silueta del éxito que juntos hemos construido y que hará que nuestra comunidad se regocije. Afianzados en una gran tradición, nuestro futuro es firme; alcanzaremos la grandeza. No será solo un rumor; la misión de la University of Miami Miller School of Medicine como integrante fundamental de la salud de los Estados Unidos se habrá convertido en una realidad.

Pero recuerden: cada uno de ustedes es de vital importancia. Cada uno contribuye a nuestra misión. Nuestro progreso aún es frágil, pero si nuestra comunidad se mantiene unida y sin brechas, llegaremos adonde merecemos estar. Y Miami será el lugar donde todo suceda en el siglo XXI.
