Free flu shots are being offered to all faculty, staff and students on the Miller School campus. If you need a kind reminder, please remember that the flu is a serious illness, and not just a bad cold. People who are not vaccinated may represent a risk to co-workers and their own family members. And despite what you may have heard, the flu shot will not make you sick. We care too much for you to not do everything we can to spare you from the flu. As an institution, we want to help safeguard your health and meet the infection control flu vaccine standard developed by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. There is ample evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine in protecting vaccine recipients. Just as important, the vaccination of health care workers also protects their patients and families. A growing number of studies show that the mortality of residents and patients of nursing homes and hospitals attributable to influenza is reduced by vaccinating the health care workers who care for them. We strongly encourage you to make use of these opportunities to get your flu shot to protect yourselves, your families, and the patients we care for.
