Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami

Dean's Perspective >>

In each issue of Miami Medicine, the flagship publication of the Miller School of Medicine, Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt will salute the work of scientists and physicians of the Miller School of Medicine.

For this issue, Dean Goldschmidt spoke with two outstanding physicians who are leading Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, already one of the world's finest and most progressive centers for ophthalmic care, research and education, to even greater heights.

Eduardo Alfonso, the fifth chairman in the institute’s 47-year history, is renown for his clinical expertise and research in eye diseases, corneal surgery and ocular microbiology. He is also medical director of Bascom Palmer’s Ocular Microbiology Laboratory.

Steven J. Gedde, professor of ophthalmology, has directed Bascom Palmer’s residency program for a decade and recently was named Educator of the Year by the South Florida Business Journal.

Two years ago this December, the University purchased University of Miami Hospital, now the flagship facility of UHealth – University of Miami Health System. Since then, we have seen UHealth grow tremendously, reaching patients the world over.

The three community physicians you are about to meet are part of the outstanding UMH team. In caring for patients at the hospital, they often consult with Miller School faculty physicians or refer patients to them when appropriate. The community doctors -- those who were on board before UM bought the hospital and those who have joined since -- work tirelessly to provide the best health care. The three physicians I interviewed reflect the diversity and brilliance of the entire UMH team.
