Orthopaedics
UHealth Orthopaedics has been improving the quality of life for thousands of individuals suffering from musculoskeletal conditions for more than three decades. Each year, the department performs more than 10,000 surgical procedures and administers treatment through 45,000 outpatient and 9,000 orthopaedic emergency room visits. The department was also the first in the Nation to combine the three disciplines of orthopaedic surgery, rehabilitation and tissue banking.
Today, musculoskeletal research is at the precipice of major breakthroughs. Through Miami CORE, (Miami Center for Orthopaedic Research and Education), UHealth Orthopaedics is at the vanguard of these studies, helping severely disabled children to walk, developing joint replacements that last a lifetime, relieving back pain and sciatica, refining microsurgery for reattaching hand and finger amputations, perfecting methods of replacing bone destroyed by cancer, and preventing arthritis and osteoporosis, among others.

The services provided at UHealth Sports Medicine Center cut across all ages, sports and disciplines. The UHealth Orthopaedics Spine Service provides care for patients with degenerative spinal problems, traumatic injuries of the spine, tumors, infections and spinal deformity. Tissue Bank
Established in 1970 and the only university-run tissue bank in the United States, the University of Miami Tissue Bank works closely with surgeons and basic science investigators to advance the field of bone and soft tissue transplantation. Our scientific endeavors include clinical trials to confirm and improve graft efficacy for oral surgery, orthopaedic tumor and spine surgery, and sports injuries. As a multidisciplinary organization of surgeons, oncologists, pathologists, scientists and technicians, we have safely recovered, processed, distributed and implanted aseptically processed bone, cartilage and soft tissue grafts in thousands of patients. Services include:
- Transplantation of bone and joints destroyed by cancer and trauma
- Bone grafting in spine and sports medicine surgery
