Community Partnerships and Resources

UHealth, the University of Miami Health System, provides more than patient care.  UHealth is committed to supporting the community in which we work.   In order to best serve the people of Miami and South Florida, UHealth and the Miller School actively seek partnerships with educational, non-profit, governmental, and medical organizations that also serve the region.

Miami Partnership/Miami Health District

The University of Miami joined representatives of governmental organizations, educational institutions, and community associations to create The Miami Health Partnership. The goal of the partnership is to rejuvenate the area surrounding the University of Miami and giving it a new identity and a new name, “The Miami Health District.”  The members of The Miami Health Partnership are committed to making the Miami Health District a more appealing place to live, work, shop, and receive medical care.

Partnerships in Palm Beach County

Rapid population growth rate in South Florida in Palm Beach County is expected to create a shortage of 356 physicians by 2011.  In order to address this situation, the Miller School has expanded its academic outreach and training in the region.

The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine four-year medical school program at FAU’s campus in Boca Raton, UMMSM/FAU expects to enroll 256 medical students on the FAU campus by 2011. Currently UMMSM/FAU students conduct rounds at Boca Raton Community Hospital.

The Miller School at JFK Hospital and the VA has created Palm Beach County's first allopathic (M.D.) residency program. A select group of residents will train in internal medicine at both JFK Medical Center in Atlantis Florida as well as at the West Palm Beach Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

 The Forum on Women’s Health

The Forum on Women’s Health is a community-based organization, affiliated with the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine, that is dedicated to the improving the health and wellness of its members and to increasing the awareness of the issues surrounding women’s health through education, outreach, and advocacy. Specifically focusing on Broward and Palm Beach counties, the Forum helps to extend the reach of South Florida’s only university-based health care system with the goal of helping all of the state’s women achieve a higher quality of life through better health.

Adopt a School

In 2008, the Miller School adopted  Allapattah Middle School, a school of 650 students located near the medical campus. Through special programs and presentations, the leadership and faculty of the Miller School, are focused on providing support and information on careers and healthy living for the students and their families.  Such community outreach is in line with the mission of the Miller School and the University of Miami Health System.

DOCS

The Miller School of Medicine’s volunteer Mitchell Wolfson, Sr. DOCS Program is a student-run non-profit aided by physician/faculty members. The students hold clinics and several annual health fairs in various Florida communities, providing free health care services where many don’t have adequate access to medical care.
