Education

Introduction

As Training Program Director I welcome you to explore this website and learn more about the exciting possibilities our program has to offer.

We currently offer a two-year program ensuring training in all aspects of clinical nephrology. These include inpatient consultation, intensive care nephrology, transplantation, interventional nephrology, outpatient hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, and outpatient consultation and follow-up. The clinical training is complemented by formal lectures and seminars with active participation of both trainees and all faculty members. An expansion of our training program is currently under way, and we plan to offer three-year pathways in the very near future.

The Jackson Memorial Hospital / Jackson Health System Nephrology Training Program only accepts applications via ERAS (1481121151) and participates in the NRMP (1104148F0).

Please feel free to contact the Training Program Coordinator, Ms Ana Otero, should you have additional questions (email: AOtero@med.miami.edu or telephone: 305-243-3582).

I am looking forward to seeing you in Miami.

Oliver Lenz, MD, FACP, FASN

Clinical Training

Overview:
The goal of the Nephrology Training Program is to provide advanced education and training for fellows to develop and acquire expertise as consultants and subspecialists in Nephrology. Ultimately, the program will enable each fellow to obtain Board Certification in the subspecialty of Nephrology. Fellows are encouraged to select a career path (academic or private) as early as possible in their training so that the second year of training can be tailored to that goal. The philosophy of the Program is to develop a commitment and dedication to scholarly excellence in patient care, teaching, and research in an environment of professionalism. This approach to learning and patient care is honored by both faculty and fellows, with faculty serving as role models. For this reason, clinical, didactic, and research activities are shared by fellows and attendings for mutual and reciprocal feedback with a common aim of improved knowledge for all.

Fellows rotate through the clinical nephrology services, and each service is staffed by a nephrology attending who is wholly responsible for the service. First year fellows have an intense clinical year with rotations on all the clinical services. In the second year of training, the fellow has a limited number of inpatient clinical rotations and is expected to focus on scholarly activities in close collaboration with one of the faculty. In addition, second year fellows are often included in the Divisions teaching activities for second year medical students in the Nephrology Mechanisms of Disease course. This enables second year fellows to enhance their teaching abilities while being required to master the subject so that they can teach the information effectively. Second year fellows will spend more time in ambulatory care for hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients, participate in pre-transplant evaluations, and maintain their presence in the general nephrology and post-transplant clinics.
