Interventional Nephrology

Dr. Arif Asif directs the Interventional Nephrology program of the Division. Interventional nephrology {link to interventional nephrology} includes the performance of diagnostic renal ultrasound, localization for percutaneous renal biopsy (native and allograft), laparoscopic PD catheter placement and removal, tunneled hemodialysis catheter placement and removal, vascular mapping, percutaneous balloon angioplasty, accessory vein obliteration procedures, vascular access thrombectomy procedures and intravascular coil and stent insertion. The educational goals of this rotation include learning proper physical examination of a vascular access, surveillance methodologies of the vascular access to insure that access function meets K/DOQI guidelines, proper technique for performance of native and transplant kidney biopsies using ultrasound localization, and knowledge about placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter and the diagnosis and correction of problems with its function.
