Consultative Nephrology

Consultative Nephrology

The entire spectrum of clinical nephrology is managed by the consultative services at Jackson Memorial Hospital, University of Miami Hospital, and Miami Veterans Administration Medical Center. The attending nephrologist and renal fellow see patients with complex presentations of acute and chronic renal failure, acute glomerulonephritis, challenging electrolyte disorders, renal disease in the obstetrical patient, and renal failure in the Intensive Care Unit. State-of-the-art renal replacement therapies, including continuous modalities of dialysis, are available for the critically ill patient with renal failure. Over 750 acute dialysis treatments are performed each month at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Transplantation

The Kidney Transplant Program at the University of Miami School of Medicine/Jackson Memorial Medical Center performs over 150 kidney and combined kidney-pancreas transplants annually. A team of three surgeons, two transplant nephrologists and seven nurse coordinators offer state-of-the-art patient care in combination with innovative research initiatives. This center has pioneered research with several new immunosuppressive agents and is a leader in the exciting area of combined bone marrow and kidney transplant. The availability of laparoscopic donor nephrectomy for living donor kidney transplantation has resulted in a shorter hospital stay and recovery period for our living donors. The successful combination of patient care and research has allowed this program to achieve success that is recognized on a national level. Our long-term patient and graft survivals are among the best in the United States. The extrarenal transplant programs (liver, small bowel, heart, and lung) are also very busy and present diagnostic and management challenges for the nephrology service.
