Interventional Nephrology
The division has developed an interventional program that offers diagnostic renal ultrasound, localization for native kidney and allograft biopsies, laparoscopic-guided peritoneal dialysis catheter placement, angioplasty of arteriovenous fistulas and grafts, and permcath placement. In the fully-equipped treatment room, located in the outpatient Hospital/Clinic on the renal floor of Jackson Memorial Hospital, Nephrology attendings use state-of-the-art ultrasound equipment and laparoscope (with full video monitoring) to offer these services to patients. Vascular procedures are performed at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinics, as well as at the Outpatient Diagnostic Unit at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
Dr. Arif Asif is the director of Interventional Nephrology for the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension here at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Asif is a member of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology (ASDIN) and is a member of their Committee on Ultrasonography. In addition, Dr. Asif is licensed to train physicians to perform the following procedures:
- Insertion of peritoneal catheters
- Insertion of tunneled hemodialysis catheters
- Angiography and angioplasty of vascular accesses
- Training in renal ultrasonography
Information about the ASDIN
The American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology was founded in 2000 to promote the proper application of new and existing procedures in the practice of nephrology with the goal of improving the care of nephrology patients.
Certification and Accreditation
Certification: Documentation by The American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology that an individual physician has met specified requirements for the performance of a particular procedure.
Accreditation: Documentation by The American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology that a nephrology training program or other training site has met specified requirements related to institutional support, facilities, expertise, experience, and personnel directed toward training in Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology.

Videos
- Renal Ultrasonography
Renal ultrasound is a safe and simple tool that a nephrologist can utilize as a critical element in the diagnosis of patients with renal disease. It is economically feasible and improves both patient care and physician efficiency.
Windows Media
(running time 1 minute) - Ultrasound Guided Renal Biopsy
Ultrasound-guided renal biopsies are performed by the nephrologists in a dedicated procedure room as well as at the bedside. The biopsies are performed under local anesthesia within 24 hours of request, including weekends if necessary.
Windows Media
(running time 3 minutes) - Peritoneoscopic Placement of Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter
- Interventional nephrology program provides comprehensive peritoneal dialysis access care and allows for timely placement of a peritoneal dialysis catheter to end stage renal disease patients choosing peritoneal dialysis. The procedures are performed in a dedicated interventional laboratory under local anesthesia.
