Dr. Ruiz is an associate professor of clinical medicine and director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship in the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine. He formerly headed Geriatrics at Mount Sinai Medical Center of Greater Miami. Dr. Ruiz, a fellowship-trained geriatrician and a medical informatics fellow of the National Library of Medicine, is board certified in internal medicine, geriatric medicine, and hospice and palliative care. An expert in e-learning in medical education, Dr. Ruiz is a founder and the director of GeriU (www.geriu.org), the Online Geriatrics University, and the Laboratory of E-learning and Multimedia Research (LEMUR) based at the Stein Gerontological Institute. He is the associate director for education/evaluation and an investigator at the Miami VA Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center. His research interests include Web-based geriatrics education, development of reusable learning objects, applications of blended learning in medical education, virtual worlds, virtual patient simulations, electronic portfolios, and educational scholarship. Dr. Ruiz has developed with his team a multitude of peer-reviewed publications and e-learning multimedia resources to teach geriatrics and is a leading authority in the field of e-learning in medical education.
