Dr. Welsh received her M.D. degree from the Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Case Western Reserve University Hospitals. During her residency, she was the recipient of an NIH training grant award to perform research on cell membrane signaling mechanisms. Based on her research, she was accepted as a Senior Staff Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD where she investigated the molecular and cell biology of intracellular signaling pathways. After moving to Florida, Dr. Welsh completed her clinical fellowship in Medical Oncology at the University of Miami. An Associate Professor of Medicine, Dr. Welsh is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She has received numerous awards including a Young Investigator Award and a Career Development Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology, and a Clinician Scientist Career Development Award from the National Cancer Institute of NIH. Her laboratory research focuses on the mechanism of autonomous growth of breast cancer cells and has been funded by the NIH, the Breast Cancer Program of the Department of Defense, and the American Cancer Society. Most recently, she was one of three investigators in the state of Florida awarded a grant from the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation. Her medical practice is devoted exclusively to the care of breast cancer patients at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and Jackson Memorial Hospital.
