Program Overview
At the Jackson Memorial Hospital Emergency Care Center, emergency medicine physicians provide the entire range of emergency treatment, from resuscitation and stabilization of patients with critical illnesses or acute trauma, to 'fast-track' management of patients with minor illnesses and injuries. Treatment areas include medical, surgical, and pediatric sections, plus a relatively new and successful Express Care Center.
| The Emergency Care Center is one of the busiest emergency departments in the United States. More than 90,000 patients are treated each year, including nearly 30,000 requiring emergency admission to critical care and inpatient services. The patient mix includes walk-in patients, patients transported in by City of Miami Fire Rescue, tertiary referrals from the medical community of south Florida, plus patients from the Caribbean basin, Central, and South America. The physician group also provides medical radio supervision and medical control for all care provided by City of Miami Fire Rescue. |
In collaboration with the Division of Cardiology, Level One emergency cardiac capabilities include; rapid thrombolysis of acute myocardial infarction in the Emergency Care Center, same-visit studies for possible coronary artery disease in patients with chest pain, and direct access to cardiologists and cardiac surgeons for state-of-the-art interventions.
Together with colleagues from neurology, Level One acute stroke care is provided. The Center is immediately adjacent to the Ryder Trauma Center (the only Level One trauma center for Miami-Dade County), and to the Hyperbaric Medicine service. The Center is fully supported around-the-clock by crucial diagnostic services, including Emergency Radiology (with CT, ultrasonography, angiography, and MRI) and Pathology.
Educational initiatives for our emergency medicine physicians begin with freshman medical students and continue throughout the residency training programs, and reaches into the community providing Continuing Medical Education (CME) lectures to community physicians. Educational programs are focused on supervision and training of medical students and residents.
Emergency medical faculty provide an annual 'First Responder' course for University of Miami School of Medicine freshman medical students. Housestaff physicians from Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopedic Surgery, and Psychiatry complete emergency medicine rotations at the Center during their residencies. Senior electives in Emergency Medicine are available for medical students from the United States and Canadian medical schools. While on rotation in the Center, residents attend an emergency medicine lecture series twice weekly. At the postgraduate level, courses are provided for paramedics, toxicology journal clubs, and continuing education courses for physicians. Additionally, many of our faculty serve as instructors in: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS).
