Admitting Patients

Direct Admission to UM Hospitalist Service at University of Miami Hospital:

The Division of Hospital Medicine offers 24/7 coverage for any patients admitted or referred to the Division’s Inpatient Medical Service at the University of Miami Hospital.

When you refer a patient to our service, you can be assured that your patient will be well cared for. You will receive regular updates on your patient’s progress without having to make repeated trips to the hospital. Finally, on discharge you will receive a detailed discharge summary on the hospital course and final medications.

Admitting a Patient:

STEP #1:
Contact a UM hospitalist by paging 305-287-6036 or calling the UM page operator at 305-243-1000.  The referring attending physician should communicate patient care details directly to the accepting hospitalist attending.
      
STEP #2: 
Call University of Miami Hospital Admitting at 305-325-5557, or send a fax to 305-325-3980, with the following information: 

• Patient Demographics
• Insurance Information
• Patient Diagnosis
• Bed Required: telemetry or regular medical bed
• In-Patient Attending: UM hospitalist (name of doctor you spoke with)

STEP #3:
Your patient should be transported to University of Miami Hospital’s Admitting area on the 2nd Floor/Main Entrance, where they will be admitted and seen by the hospitalist as soon as they arrive.

Transferring from Another Facility

If you need to facilitate a patient transfer from an outside hospital, please call us at 305-243-1960 and we will be happy to facilitate it for you.

Admission to the UM Hospitalist Serivce via the Emergency Department:
If you are referring  an acutely ill patient to University of Miami Hospital’s Emergency Department (ED), you should call the Emergency Department at (305) 325-5464 and alert the ED Physician giving patient name and brieft history and request  the patient to be admitted to the UM hospitalist service.
