Education

Hospitalists from the Division of Hospital Medicine play a key role in educating medical students at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.  At the University of Miami Hospital, fourth-year students from UM will be working under the supervision of hospitalists to do their medicine sub-internships. The third year students rotate with the hospitalists at both JMH and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Division of Hospital Medicine is also collaborating with residency program directors to build a specialty residency training track in hospital medicine to help residents become better prepared for this burgeoning field.  In addition, members of the Division are involved with Quality improvement projects at all three hospitals.

Division of Hospital Medicine Grand Rounds at Jackson Memorial Hospital

The Division of Hospital Medicine Grand Rounds are held at Jackson Memorial Hospital are every other Tuesday at noon in the 2nd floor Central Auditorium. During each presented topic the speakers address the epidemiology, pathophysiology and evidence based management of diseases as well as ways to improve practice and system based care. Our goal is to update physicians on recent evidence based clinical guidelines that are shown to improve outcomes and quality of care.
We have established a list of faculty members based on their expertise in several topics.   The selected speakers are those who have research experience and can update faculty and housestaff on the latest updates in clinical management guidelines for the selected topics.

The Grand Rounds are advertised using the electronic journal e-update published every Tuesday and e-mailed to the University of Miami faculty and staff. Flyers are distributed to UM physicians.  The residency administrator and coordinator post flyers in the Internal Medicine Residency Library and computer lab at JMH, and text pages are sent notifying housestaff of the topic, speaker and time the morning of the presentation.

The Division of Hospital Medicine strongly encourages all its faculty members to attend the Grand Rounds at JMH. For any further information regarding the schedule and the Grand Rounds topics feel free to contact our CME Grand Rounds director Dr. Cynthia I. Rivera.

Medicine Grand Rounds at the University of Miami Hospital

The Medicine Grand Rounds at the University of Miami Hospital (UMH) are held every other Thursday at noon in the 1st Floor Seminar Center. During each presented topic the speakers address the epidemiology, the pathophysiology and evidence based management of several diseases as well as ways to improve practice and system based care. Our goal is to update physicians on recent evidence based clinical guidelines that are shown to improve outcomes and quality of care.
We have established a list of faculty members based on their expertise in several topics and their     international recognition. These experts have conducted research projects in their respective fields and have the most updated clinical management guidelines.

We ask each lecturer to conceive at least 3 multiple choice questions that are administered during the lecture using an Audience Response System (ARS). There is evidence that interactive learning sessions enhances the capacity to process new information. The audience response system allows for immediate feedback and it has been shown to create new knowledge faster. An annual evaluation of participants will be conducted to report changes that have resulted in performance or competence from this series. Clinical data will be provided to show positive changes in patient outcomes. For this purpose we will use established hospital softwares to generate a report on all quality indicators. We will compare the scores before the lecture series with the ones achieved after. These scores are directly related to patient outcomes.

The Grand Rounds are advertized using the electronic journal e-update published every Tuesday and e-mailed to the University of Miami faculty and staff. Flyers are distributed to UMH physicians and faxed to their offices. We also have the UMH operator announce the time and location of the lecture on the same day.

The Division of Hospital Medicine strongly encourages all its faculty members to attend the Grand Rounds at UMH. For any further information regarding the schedule and the Grand Rounds topics feel free to contact our coordinator Julie Vasquez. If you are interested to be a speaker please contact the Grand Rounds director Dr Peki.
