Outpatient Services
Outpatient Dialysis
The Division currently has four dialysis units that it operates in close collaboration with DaVita Corporation, our corporate dialysis partner. The on-campus clinic is a large 165 patient facility that also houses our peritoneal dialysis program for training and long-term care of our ~50 peritoneal dialysis patients. The other three dialysis clinics are located within 1-10 miles of the medical campus and care for an additional ~200 patients. The Division provides Medical Directorship and physician care for all of these patients. In addition, we have ARNPs who work full-time in each of these clinics to further enhance the care delivered to our patients.
Division faculty care for all of the approximately 400 hemodialysis patients in our system as well as the 50 PD patients. Patients requiring hospital admission are admitted to either the University of Miami Hospital or Jackson Memorial where there care is supervised by other faculty of the Division.
Kidney Transplantation
Over the last 35 years, The University of Miami and Jackson Memorial Hospital have worked together to build one of the largest and most successful kidney transplant programs in the United States. We are in the top 10 programs in number of transplants done annually (> 220) as well as patient and graft survival. All transplants are done at Jackson Memorial Hospital under the supervision of one of the four dedicated transplant surgeons and one of our three full-time transplant nephrologists. In addition to living donor kidney transplants, the center performs a large number of deceased donor transplants and simultaneous kidney-pancreas transplants for type 1 diabetics with end stage renal disease.
The program has been a leader in designing innovative clinical trials to develop new immunosuppressive strategies as well as basic science investigation in chimerism and tolerance, the autoimmune component of type 1 diabetes mellitus and recurrence of focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis in the allograft. We are also an ASN/ATS certified training program for Transplant Fellowship.
Outpatient management is provided by faculty members at the Transplant Center located in the Highland Professional Building on the medical campus. Faculty are available to see patients who seek evaluation for transplantation as well as those already transplanted. There is also a satellite facility in Pompano (Broward County) where post transplant patients can have their laboratory tests done.
The medical center is home to other solid organ transplant programs in liver, intestinal, heart and lung. Many of these patients require skilled nephrology input and are seen in consultation by our faculty as well.
Nephrology Outpatient Private Practice
Division faculty are available to see private patients in consultation both for second opinions as well as long-term management. All patients are seen at the University of Miami Hospital and Clinic on the medical campus. Faculty are available with expertise in the care of patients with diabetic nephropathy, hypertensive kidney disease, polycystic kidney disease, glomerular diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus, IgA nephropathy, membranous and focal segmental glomerular sclerosis. Expertise is also available in the management of patients with kidney stones and all types of chronic kidney disease up to and including planning for dialysis and/or transplantation.
