Sylvester’s Dr. Asha B. Pillai Receives Grant for Innovative Transplant Immunology Research

Asha B. Pillai, M.D., a Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center researcher who specializes in pediatric immunotherapy, has received a $1.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health for her innovative work in transplant immunology. Pillai wants to give hope, and perhaps even a cure, to patients with non-cancerous blood disorders like sickle cell anemia and thalassemia.

UHealth’s Specialized Neurosonology Lab Focuses on Cerebrovascular Health

Neurosonology — the ultrasonic imaging of neural structures — allows physicians at UHealth – the University of Miami Health System to get a unique and very detailed look at the health of the arteries inside and outside the brain. This can mean a more precise diagnosis, prognosis and management of people after a stroke, transient ischemic attack and even asymptomatic cerebrovascular disease.

UHealth Neurosurgeon Performs Lifesaving Procedure on Bahamian Chief Medical Officer

UHealth neurosurgeon Robert Starke, M.D., successfully diagnosed and surgically treated a former chief medical officer from the Bahamas who suffered a rare vascular condition in the brain. In December 2016 Glen Beneby, M.D., suddenly blacked out and collapsed. He then experienced cognitive decline and weakness on the left side of his body, and after being misdiagnosed he was ultimately referred to Starke.

Global Oncology and International Programs at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine recently established new partnerships in South America, collaborated on an international symposium in Brazil, and hosted the first annual Global Oncology Research Dialogue at Sylvester.

Researcher Identifies Increased Survival Factors for Sarcoidosis Patients with Lung Transplants

Sarcoidosis patients have better outcomes with lung transplants than patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Their survival outlook is also greater when the donor is young or white, or when receiving a double lung transplant, according to a University of Miami Miller School of Medicine researcher who is an expert on this rare inflammatory lung disease.
