Bascom Palmer Eye Institute Rated #1 in Overall Programs, Patient Care and Education
Ophthalmology Times announces top ophthalmology programs in USA
October 8, 2010, Miami, FL -- Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has been ranked, for the third consecutive year, as having the Best Overall Programs in the nation, as published in the October 1 edition of Ophthalmology Times. The Institute also ranked “Best” in both Clinical (Patient) Care and Residency Training. The annual rankings, now in their 15th year, concern the top ophthalmology programs in the United States. They are compiled from an online survey of chairmen and resident directors from the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology and all Ophthalmology Times subscribers. The four categories reviewed are: Overall Programs, Residency Training, Clinical (Patient) Care and Research. Additionally, Bascom Palmer ranked second in research.
“Being recognized as the best in the country in overall programs, as well as in clinical care and residency training, reflects our strong commitment to each of our patients,” said Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., chairman of Bascom Palmer. “Providing exceptional medical care is our prime responsibility. After nearly 50 years of outstanding service,” he continued, “we have learned that the foundation of a leading residency program includes the ability to attract the most gifted residents, an outstanding faculty that knows how to further develop the skills, talent and compassion of each of these promising physicians, and having adequate patient volume so that all residents can attain the clinical experience needed to become the best in the field.”
Bascom Palmer selects only seven residents annually from the approximately 450 applicants seeking training positions at the prestigious Institute each year. With an international reputation as one of the premier providers of eye care in the world, Bascom Palmer has been ranked the number one eye hospital in the nation in the U.S. News & World Report annual survey for the past seven consecutive years.
Additionally, it is the largest ophthalmic care, research and educational facility in the southeastern United States, annually treating more than 200,000 patients, virtually addressing every ophthalmic condition, and performing more than 12,000 procedures. Founded in 1962, Bascom Palmer has patient care facilities in Miami, Palm Beach Gardens, Plantation and Naples. It serves as the Department of Ophthalmology for the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, part of UHealth, the University of Miami Health System.
