UM Miller Names Associate Dean for International Medicine

3/21/2008

Eduardo de Marchena, M.D., a professor of medicine and surgery at the Miller School of Medicine, has been appointed associate dean for international medicine.  A nationally recognized cardiologist, de Marchena directs the University of Miami International Medicine Institute and is chairman of the University of Miami Medical Group (UMMG).

De Marchena is also UMMG’s director of interventional cardiology and the Cardiovascular Center. Within the Miller School, de Marchena has been an interim chair for the Department of Medicine and has been chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine.

“There is no better person than Dr. de Marchena to oversee the University of Miami international medicine initiative,” says Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., senior vice president for medical affairs and dean of the Miller School. “He has amply demonstrated his skill and judgment in a succession of roles with the Miller School, and richly deserves to be an associate dean.”

In its first nine months the International Medicine Institute has been working on many opportunities  including collaboration opportunities for medical education, training and research throughout Latin America and the Caribbean; as well as a potential partnership with a prestigious hospital in Cartagena, Colombia to include medical tourism.  The International Medicine Institute is striving to establish the University of Miami as a key global leader in academic medicine.
