Electron Microscopy Core Facility

Description / Purpose:

The Electron Microscopy (EM) Core facility is to provide the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine academic and research community access to the conventional transmission electron microscope and associated sample processing services.

The EM Core has a conventional transmission electron microscope available on a ‘fee for service’ and first come first served basis to all student, faculty, researcher, or corporate entity that may need this specialized technique.

JEOL JEM-100CX transmission electron microscope:

  • side-entry goniometer
  • maintained on service contract
  • Guaranteed resolution: 2.0 A (lattice), 4.0 A (point-to-point)
  • Accelerating voltage: 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 kV
  • Magnification range: 100X to 450,000X

The JEOL 100CX provides magnification from 100x to 250,000x and a resolution of 0.2nm. It is capable of accelerating voltages from 20-100kV, but operates at 80kV for most biological purposes. You can observe your specimen on the screen, or capture images on 3.25 x 4" film. The camera holds 50 sheets of film, and micrographs are printed with magnifications and sequential identification numbers. Negatives can be scanned for digital storage and manipulation on your own.
