Best Doctors in America
A recent edition of “Best Doctors in America” honored 43 University of Miami physicians. This is an incredible achievement as only 60 pediatric physicians from the Miami area were mentioned and other pediatrics departments across the nation only had a handful of physicians listed.
Steven Lipshultz, M.D., chair of the Department of Pediatrics, recently made national headlines with a study demonstrating that an experimental drug, dexrazoxane, is effective in protecting the hearts of children undergoing treatment for cancer and HIV/AIDS. The discovery will benefit thousands of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, the leading cause of pediatric cancer.
- Ming-Lon Young, M.D., a cardiologist specializing in electrophysiology, is the only physician in South Florida performing radio frequency ablation on children and has done more of these procedures than anyone in the country.
- Alvaro Galindo, M.D., a specialist in cardiac catheterization, is at the forefront of the treatment of numerous pediatric cardiac problems. Using a catheter, he is able to close holes in children’s hearts or open up significant valve obstructions.
- Eduardo Bancalari, M.D., directs one of the nation’s largest and most successful neonatal units. He has saved the lives of thousands of tiny babies, trained hundreds of neonatologists around the world and conducted research that has contributed significantly to dramatic changes in the field.
- Tracie L. Miller, M.D., with support from the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation, launched the new Division of Clinical Research, an interdisciplinary effort that will empower a broad range of investigations throughout the Department of Pediatrics at the Miller School of Medicine.
Make a gift to the Department of Pediatrics.
