New Hope & Tools for Genetic Predictive Testing

University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, through a $5 million grant from the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation, is establishing Florida’s first comprehensive medical genetics diagnostic laboratory offering an array of tests including DNA, biochemical and cytogenetics testing.

“The vision of GeneCure is to perform genetic diagnostic testing to determine human susceptibility to diseases with the goal of preventing those diseases. The concept of genetic diagnostics is based upon predictive testing of DNA and will allow doctors to pinpoint not just the cause but the location of human illness, develop treatments individually tailored to each patient, and allow preventive medicine to intervene at the time of or even before birth,” says Louis J. Elsas, M.D., director of the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Center for Medical Genetics. GeneCure will serve as a launching facility for new diagnostic tests and outcomes analysis from the research laboratories at the University. The center will also help Latin American and Caribbean countries develop skills in genetic diagnostics.
