The University of Miami orthopaedic oncology fellowship encourages applicants who desire a comprehensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of adults and children with bone and soft tissue tumors. The program accepts two fellows a year to engage in high level complex treatment of a variety of complex orthopaedic oncologic conditions. The program also offers a variety of educational opportunities, as well as clinical, translational and basic science research in our integrated sarcoma research laboratories. We offer a diverse experience in allograft, custom metal, and composite reconstructions augmented by cutting edge orthobiologics.

We have assembled a very strong multidisciplinary team of surgeons, radiologists, pathologists, medical and radiation oncologists. The clinical experience is second to none with a very large patient catchment area encompassing South Florida, as well as the Caribbean basin and South America. The fellows have an exceptional pediatric clinical experience between Jackson Memorial Hospital and Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.  In addition, we have research collaborations with basic scientists in the Life Science Park, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, the University of Miami Department of Bioengineering and Vivex Biomedical (formerly, University of Miami Tissue Bank).

Our center is also one of the leading chordoma treatment centers in the US. Our experienced oncologists are engaged in numerous clinical trials and work together with our surgeons in multidisciplinary clinics where patients are initially evaluated, undergo in office ultrasound and biopsy with same day interpretations. Treatment plans are immediate and further reiterated in multidisciplinary meetings that convene twice a week. Care is initiated quickly, personalized, and scrutinized allowing the fellows to have a balanced and generous oversight of all potential treatment options.

Fellows in this program are important educators and are expected to share new ideas, question and critique traditional methods, and share new technologies and surgical techniques. They are also expected to take advantage of the faculty (across disciplines) and research resources. The fellows will publish peer reviewed manuscripts as well as present at national and international meetings. A graduating fellow from the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial orthopaedic oncology fellowship will have the confidence and clinical tools to practice the specialty at the highest level of competence.
