Mark D. Brown Orthopaedic Grand Round Lecture Series

The 37 Grand Rounds for this academic year include topics on children’s spinal deformity, spine surgery, joint replacement, trauma, sports, hand and upper extremity, rehabilitation, pain control, infection, research, and tumor.

Interesting topics among others that may be presented:

  • theories on the etiology of scoliosis (spine curvature)
  • pain control after total knee replacement
  • patient outcomes 10 years following disc replacement or spinal fusion for painful cervical disc disease
  • bone implants to attach bionic prosthesis to replace amputated arms and legs (similar to highly successful dental implants)
  • the nature, risk/benefit ratio, and social implications of cannabinoids for patients suffering from musculoskeletal pain

And a special grand round on the implications of coronavirus in orthopaedic trauma care.

These weekly live presentations are recorded and available online for CME credits for those participants that cannot attend in person because of clinical duties. The CME credits are required to attain and renew professional licenses, for board certification and for clinical privileges in hospitals and clinics.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, with Miami CORE support, we were able to convert Grand Rounds to an electronic platform so that speakers can present from any location, with a real-time or delayed broadcast. Participation online is interactive, documented, and eligible for continuing medical education credits. Out-of-town guest speakers, who are not allowed to travel have agreed to present grand rounds from the safety of their home.

On April 2, 2020, one of our orthopaedic residents, Dr. Adriana Urruela presented the first real-time grand rounds from the safety of her home via video conferencing. A total of 47 participants signed on from their homes, from clinics, from offices or from hospitals, thus complying with the ultimate in “social distancing” to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It wasn’t socially distancing at all; on the contrary an informative, interactive, and effective learning experience.
